Best Android tips & tricks: Customise your Android smartphone to get the most out of it

There are a wide variety of Android phones out there, with a lot of manufacturers opting to implement their own skin of Android, such as Samsung with their TouchWiz interface. Despite having a skin over a vanilla installation, these phones are still running on Android. These phones all have certain tricks up their sleeves, which will allow you to customise and personalise your smartphone to your liking.
Here are our best Android tips and tricks. Note: As there are a large variety of Android phones out there, these tips might not always apply to you; it depends on what Android version you're running on and the type of Android layer that's on your phone.

Best Android tips & tricks: Backup & sync

If you have multiple devices or wish to use your Google account as a means of backing up your contacts, photos and settings, your Android device can help save these settings in the cloud so that you don't have to remember them and re-sync them each time.
Depending on what you want to synchronise, head into the settings and look for Backup & Sync (or Backup & reset). In this menu, enable Google to backup your data.
If you're purely looking to backup photos, head into the Google Photos app and within its Settings select Backup & Sync. This small tip will allow you to have somewhat have a backup of your important settings and namely your contact details, which you'll then be able to view on your computer.

Best Android tips & tricks: Developer Options | Speed up your Android phone :

The name might frighten you, as you can change a lot of settings through your Android's developer settings, however there are three options in here which will help speed up your phone, at least its perceived performance will increase.

Once you're set as a developer, you can go back to the About section of your Android phone to see the Developer Options. Within this section you'll find: Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale. These three options determine the speed of animations and the time it takes for them to show. By default these should be set to 1x. If you tap on these options and set them all to 0.5x, your phone's perceived speed will increase by 50%...

Best Android tips & tricks: Battery

Every Android phone has a battery monitor, whereby you'll have the ability to control the consumption or power saving modes.
You'll find your device's battery settings within the Settings of your phone. Once in, you can tap on the consumption tab to reveal more details on what's consuming your device's battery and set power saver modes...

         The best HTC 10 cases

With a new phone comes the fear of scratches and drops. Protect your new HTC 10 from impact peril with these excellent cases.

Olixar has been super quick at preparing cases to be ready for sale with the launch of the HTC 10. This one here is for those after some extra tough protection. The two part ArmourDillo takes its design from everyone’s favourite part-shelled creature, and the design is in two parts.
The inner section is a shock proof wrapper for the 10, while the back section grips it in place, with the advantage of two pieces to disperse shocks and drops to best effect. The back also has a handy stand for watching video in landscape.

   Best browser VPNs 2017

Opera recently announced that it was adding a VPN feature to its popular web browser, allowing users increased privacy online by obscuring their location and browsing behaviour. Here are your options, including alternatives for Chrome, IE, Firefox, and even your smartphone and tablet. Best browser VPNs.

Best VPN browsers

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and does pretty much what it says. Most people use VPNs for accessing websites that would otherwise be blocked, for whatever reason. Whether you want to add a layer of security through anonymity or you want to watch Netflix or another video service from a country in which it's not available, a VPN could help. You'll find more in-depth information in our Best VPN roundup.
These days, you can download a free web browser with built-in VPN capabilities, but for those, such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox which don't have this feature, you can install extensions or plug-ins to do the same job.
Another alternative is a standalone application which automatically routes all web traffic through a VPN. Many of the best VPNs aren't free, but there are lots of free options. On the following slides are a mixture of paid and free choices.

Octa-core vs quad-core vs dual-core: which is best?

In smartphones we’ve seen a similar progression, with quite a few phones boasting octa-core chips. Eight cores is almost unheard of on desktop PCs, so why have phones gained extra cores so quickly?
The answer, in short, is a demand for better battery life.
Many phones use ARM processors, and while it is – relatively speaking – fairly easy to put a powerful quad-core processor in the latest phone, battery technology isn’t really up to the job of keeping that processor (along with the screen, modem, GPS and other components) fed with power all day long.
The ‘low power’ cores are used for most of the time, including for tasks such as reading and sending email, navigating around the operating system, and also browsing the web. But when more power is needed, such as for intensive games or editing photos or video, the chip dynamically switches to the faster quartet of cores.
So far, the only octa-core processors we’ve seen have been in Android ...

19 best HTC Vive games of 2017: Dinosaurs, Star Wars, puzzlers and more

2017 is the year of virtual reality, with the likes of the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR all available to buy in the UK. It's an exciting experience ordering a HTC Vive, but what about once it arrives? Which games will you play on SteamVR? Here, we round up some of the most exciting virtual reality games available in 2017 for the HTC Vive. Best games for HTC Vive.

After years of controlling Serious Sam from above, it’s time for gamers to step into the shoes of the man himself with Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope. The game, while currently still in early access, provides users with a shooter that’s both insanely action packed, and insanely enjoyable. Dual-wield miniguns, rocket launchers, heavy lasers and more to wipe out waves of incoming enemies and stupidly overpowered bosses on Earth and in the universe beyond.
Graphically it’s impressive, but it’s the gunplay that we love the most. You can’t beat mowing down waves of enemies with miniguns, right? While there are only a handful of levels available at the moment, the developers are looking to expand the game as it heads towards its full release.

iPhone 8 UK release date: September 2017

Apple is set to go big on the iPhone's 10th anniversary, which could go some way to make up for this year's relatively minor upgrade. A combination of design and hardware changes should make the iPhone 8 the most radical new iPhone to date.
The iPhone 8 could be the iPhone with which Jony Ive finally gets his own way: an iPhone that resembles a single sheet of glass with an edge-to-edge OLED screen. According to an Apple supplier, at least one of the company's new iPhones for 2017 will have a glass body. The TouchID scanner is thought to be hidden within the glass, while the physical Home button will be gone.
Other rumours suggest the iPhone 8 will feature wireless charging for the first time, and possible biometric features such as facial recognition or iris scanning. It'll run the Apple A11 processor and motion co-processor, and be devilishly fast.
One iPhone we won't see in 2017 is an upgrade to the iPhone SE, which Apple allegedly fears may hurt its iPhone 7 sales.

3 Best Mac Wallpaper Sources

3 Best Mac Wallpaper Sources

But before I delve into the actual apps, let me reflect on what I feel makes for the best Mac wallpaper source in the first place. Above all I want breathtaking photos and/or creative illustrations. So the quality of the wallpaper selection matters. In other words, there’s Mac wallpaper and then there’s Mac wallpaper. It’s not all created equal. A curated selection doesn’t hurt anything.
Next I’m looking for a clean interface. I don’t care if it’s a website or an app or some sort of combo as long as it’s uncluttered and easy to get around. Just show me the goods and get out of the way!
Finally — and this last bit is my own personal preference — I like some shade or combination of the following attributes: modern, colorful, Apple-related, nature scenes (especially high-quality space images), architecture, abstract designs and images that make me feel happy in one way or another. Hipster is fine as long as it’s not melancholy. Above all else, though, I desire a creative image for my Mac background: I love to be surrounded by creativity in my workspace (that’s why I’ve got 2 digital art frames flanking my computer).

Mini Laptops: the 7 Smallest Laptops

Mini Laptops: the 7 Smallest Laptops Actually Worth Buying

I’m frequently traveling or working outside the office so I like my laptops small (mini, in fact). Ever shrinking bezels, thinner keys and more efficient chips have enabled manufacturers to give us mini laptops with decently-large screens that somehow retain small overall footprints. The problem is that there are so many laptops to choose from these days it’s hard to narrow down which are actually worth buying.
And by worth buying I mean mini laptops that aren’t just small but that are also powerful enough to get some real work done (or gaming and streaming depending on what you’re after). These laptops, some of the smallest laptops in the world, are far from something like a Chromebook that would just let you get by doing minimal computing tasks. These laptops here are serious beasts — some of the best laptops on the planet.
But obviously there’s a point of diminishing return — you can only shrink a laptop so far before it becomes either unusable or pointless. I mean, we carry about incredibly powerful computers in the form of smartphones in our pockets and the whole point of having a laptop, really, is to have a full-size keyboard at your disposal (otherwise a tablet would do just fine). So for that reason the mini laptops here are all going to have screen sizes around 13″ (or slightly less). For that reason the mini laptops here are all going to have screen sizes around 13″ (or slightly less).
Below I’m going to give you the very basics in terms of info and I’m not going to put a heavy emphasis on processors and speed because those specs are pretty customizable. My job is to round up the best, smallest laptops to make your job of researching which one to buy as easy as possible. So get after it (many of the machines below do more than I can mention here so make sure to do a deeper dive on anything that piques your interest).

My 3 Favorite iPhone Wallpaper

My 3 Favorite iPhone Wallpaper Sources for Awesome iPhone Backgrounds

So where do I look when I need some new iPhone wallpaper? 3 main places as it turns out. I’ve tried several different wallpaper apps but wow, most of them are horrible. I hate it when apps are filled with junky ads or have horrible interfaces that look like it was a class project (and whoever made it got a D). So the wallpaper sources I gravitate toward tend to be ultra high quality.
